K.D. Gennaro

K.D. Gennaro, known as Karen to her family and friends, wrote her first poem at age eight—unable to compete with her younger brother’s amazing drawing talent she found excitement in using words to create images. Her poem, titled Colors, began like this: “Red means stop, Green means go, Yellow means watch out, And orange means slow…”  (It could only get better from there.)

After receiving a special education degree at Syracuse University, she taught and read to children, including her own, for years. Currently, she volunteers at the Center on Wrongful Convictions at the Northwestern University School of Law.

As a member of SCBWI, she attends conferences, workshops, and classes. Her debut YA novel, based on experiences while teaching in the Ohio Department of Corrections, is titled KEYS TO FREEDOM which was sold to Saddleback Educational Publishing, and was released in 2017. Her WIP is a Non-Fiction book for teens on Legal Issues.
